Michael McGuire Bio

Bio
Michael McGuire's artwork is a result of many influences, both from the artworld and from everyday life. Born in Waltham, Ma., and growing up in Lexington, as well as a long time resident of South Boston, he graduated from Massachusetts College of Art with a BFA in Sculpture. When he relocated to North Truro with his family 30 years ago he began concentrating solely on painting. This was partially due to space limitations of moving from a very large studio in South Boston, to working in a small cottage shared with his three small children. Painting has been his main focus ever since. As a working artist, painting became his sole occupation and he opened McGuire Gallery in Provincetown. He now spends time painting parts of the year in Arles and Paris France. His artwork is in collections all over the U.S. as well as Ireland, Mexico, France, the UK, Germany, Russia and Canada
Artist Statement
My work explores interior spaces—both architectural and emotional—as places where memory, longing, and presence intersect. Through layered brushwork, saturated color fields, and abstracted figures, I aim to evoke the quiet tension of moments suspended in time.
The figures in my paintings are often anonymous or obscured, existing in liminal zones—part dream, part recollection. Rooms and corridors become psychological environments, shaped as much by the unseen as by what's visible. I'm drawn to ambiguity: the way a shadow can suggest both safety and threat, or how the simplest posture can hint at grief, stillness, or surrender. My process is intuitive, rooted in gesture, revision, and erasure. I work in oil, often returning to a piece over weeks or months, allowing the painting to reveal itself gradually. This ongoing body of work is less about narrative than atmosphere—less about what happened than what lingers. I want the viewer to feel like they've entered a familiar space they can't quite place, where something just ended or is about to begin.
